The track doctors job is to look after the jockey’s well being. There were three doctors in Gowran park on Thursday. Two to look after jockeys and a third was required due to the number of people in attendance.
Dr McGoldrick explained that he was required to clear the jockeys before they ride. “We’ve one fellow here today with a broken collar bone and I have to clear him before he can ride,” he said.
The rest of Dr McGoldrick’s duties involve following each race in a chase ambulance and tending to the jockey’s if they fall during the race. “We follow the races and pick up the fallers and examine them,” said Dr McGoldrick.
Dr McGoldrick who lives in Curragh, comes to the races in Gowran twice a year. He always attends the Thyestes day in Gowran and usually a second flat days racing during the summer.
