Harry Duggan holds his nerve

The Kilkenny College Senior Golf team advanced to the final of the Leinster Schools Matchplay Championship for the second year running with a thrilling victory over a

strong St Andrew’s College in Naas Golf Club on 19th January. Conditions were breezy and cold and with soft fairways and difficult pins scoring wasn’t easy. However,

Kilkenny’s Brendan Dowling and Josh Glass played par golf most of the afternoon, forcing their opponents to make errors under pressure. Excellent 4 and 2 and 6 and 5

wins resulted, Andrew’s hit back to win Game 3 when Jeremy Duncan’s putt on 17 landed them a 2 and 1 win. With Ross Steedman 1 down playing the 18th, the pressure shifted to the team’s youngest member, 1st Year’s Harry Duggan. Two holes up having made a long putt on 16, Harry faced the intimidating shot over water from the tee at the par 3, 17th. He calmly struck the shot to the middle of the green and knocked the putt close for a concession and the match. Malahide Community School edged out Blackrock College in the day’s second semi-final to set up a meeting with Kilkenny in the final, the winner of which represents Leinster in the play offs against the other provinces for the All Ireland Schools title.
