Kilkenny Archaeological Society AGM
More than usual interest has been generated by this years annual general meeting of Kilkenny Archaeological Society which takes place next Wednesday, February 22nd in Rothe House at 8.00pm. The election of officers but more especially those of the Governing Council have taken on the appearance of a major “changing of the old guard.”
The Society – which has always been an all Kilkenny county organisation - is controlled by its governing Council, whose current membership is very largely Kilkenny City based. This reality was never a matter of policy or preference but simply as the result of distance, time and convenience. It looks like this is the year when this composition of the Council is going to change. The society welcomes this development, indeed has worked to promote it in many ways. Kilkenny Archaeological Society has sought to forge closer links and a better relationship with the very many (22 at last count) groups, societies and clubs throughout the county who have an interest in the history, archaeology and folk lore of their own areas especially but also in that of the county as a whole.
These range from groups in Castlecomer in the North to Fidown in the south, from the eastern edge at Graignamanagh on the Carlow Border to Johnstown and Urlingford adjoining Tipperary in the west. It is anticipated that a number of these groups will nominate individuals to stand for election to the Council of Kilkenny Archaeological Society and should make for a more broadly based, inclusive and wider range of activities during the coming years.
The AGM audience will hear the President’s Address by Mr Peter McQuillan which it is anticipated will prove of considerable interest and provide much food for thought. The secretary and other officers will give a report of their stewardship during the past year as they too seek re-election to their respective posts. Considerable attention is being focused on the pivotal roles of vice President and vice- chairman.
Also available will be details of the doings of the various sub-committees which will facilitate those who wish to play an active role in the societies many areas of activities. These currently range from duck breeding! to writing for radio, from book binding courses to folklore collecting. The AGM is the opportunity for all with an interest in any and all aspects of history, folklore and antiquity of the county to play their part in collecting, promoting, preserving, enhancing and –sadly in a few cases – protecting the shared history of this remarkable county of Kilkenny.
