Twenty-seven primary schools will be receiving a free environmental workshop in the months ahead, thanks to the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund 2011.

Organised by Kilkenny County Council, the 10 “Rubbish Monster” puppet shows will educate children in Kilkenny City on the importance of keeping their local area litter-free. Mayor Cllr David Fitzgerald has lent his support by introducing the show to the children, and it is the first of many anti-litter initiatives that will run throughout 2012 in a bid to promote the anti-litter message.

Seven schools currently working on the biodiversity theme of the Green Schools programme have been offered a nature workshop while another 10 schools will be visited by the Down to Earth Theatre Company, who will perform an environmental themed show based on X Factor.

In addition to the programme funded by the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund, the council is also organising SEAI to visit the county to assist a number of schools working on their energy theme for the Green School programme.

“It is fortunate to be able to offer schools such a diverse collection of activities which promote the environment. Each activity serves as a great additional resource to schools who are participating in the Green Schools programme,” said the council’s environmental awareness officer, Bernadette Moloney.
