AFTER leading by three points at the interval, Danesfort put in a strong second half to beat Galmoy in this Northern junior ‘B’ hurling league tie at Danesfort on Sunday. The first half exchanges were even enough with the respective fre
e takers Cathal O’Neill and Padhric Gray keeping their sides in touch with some accurate strikes.

O’Neill complimented his placed ball successes with a good goal for Danesfort in the 23rd minute. This left Danesfort leaders by 1-8 to 0-8 at the break.

Gray had hit five frees for Galmoy, plus a 28th minute one from play, while Phil Brennan and Donica Gray struck one each.Frank Minogue (0-2) and Richard Troy were the other first half scorers for the home side.

Galmoy were dealt a blow after half time when Padhric Gray retired with an ankle injury. He was replaced by Joe Doyle who had retired at the break. Stephen Maher and Cathal O Neill (free) exchanged early second half points before the deciding score arrived.

Danesfort won a free in the midfield, but when a Galmoy midfielder showed dissent to the referee, the sliotar was advanced. With only three players on the Galmoy goal line, free taker Cathal O’Neill stole a march on his opponents and the St Kieran’s College student rattled the back of the net from 30 metres.

This goal inspired Danesfort. From here to the end they out-scored their opponents by 1-6 to 0-1 to register a deserved victory. Even late substitutes, Liam Phelan and Mark Cody rose white flags for a team which featured five players from their victorious intermediate team of the previous day.

For Danesfort, Cathal O’Neill had a very profitable afternoon from play and from frees. Shem Hurley made some vital saves in goal, while Darren Booth and Frank Minogue also did well.

For Galmoy, Jason Stanley was a busy ‘keeper. Brian and Leo Doherty tried hard in defence. Padhric Gray did well until injured and Pierce Harte tried hard also.
