Coon play to be revived for one more night

After taking to the stage for three nights last weekend, the Kilquan Players are reviving their performance of Michael Ginnley’s A Wake in the West once more this Saturday night.

This performance at 8pm in Coon will be in aid of the Cathal Fitzpatrick fund, for a boy from Ballinabranna with cerebral palsy who needs to travel to England for an operation.

Set in County Mayo in the 1970s, the story starts when Tom Healy (Mike Tunstead) has died and his family and friends gather for the wake. However, consternation arises when Dr Nora (Ann Tunstead) informs Tom’s daughter Mary (Sibrina Brennan) that Tom’s last wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered over the sea. What will Fr Cassidy (Gordon Watchorn) have to say about this fiasco? Neighbours Rose (Frances Sweeney) and Margaret (Marie Purcell) are on hand to provide a laugh or two along the way when they call to pay their last respects. Martin (Tom Brennan), Tom’s son, returns from America for the funeral and is intent on rekindling the romance between himself and neighbour Joan (Maggie Cooney). Meanwhile Barney (Michael Somers), Margaret’s husband and village drunk, is charged with rounding up the boats for Tom’s last journey.
