Singers wanted for Thomas Moore competition
The Thomas Moore Singing Competition is now open to entrants, with entry open to all, be it schools, teachers, parents or individual students, as it prepares to take place on February 26 in the Watergate Theatre.
Again this year, there will be two trophies that were presented last year: The Nostalgia Cup and The Rafter-Dempsey Cup. There will be a bursary for the winner of the Senior B competition, The Kyteler’s Inn Bursary valued at €500 cash, presented by Nicci Flynn.
There is also the introduction of new categories of prize winner, including Most Promising Young Singer and the Kilkenny Academy of Music Award singing bursary.
An entry form is printed in this week’s Kilkenny People.
The test piece will be any Thomas Moore song and a song of own choice if recalled. Primary school pupils sing unaccompanied and secondary school students must be accompanied on piano either by the official competition accompanist, Maura Rafter, by their teacher or by anyone else they choose.
The competition will begin at 9.30am on the day, with secondary schools in the afternoon. The competition will again be adjudicated by Sylvia O’ Regan, a lecturer in singing at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin.
