Three days of art, music at Clancy festival
THE Clancy Brothers Music and Arts Festival comes to Carrick on Suir from this Friday until Sunday, including a performance by Sharon Shannon that is sure to set the weekend off on a lively note.
The Clancy Family Legacy show is a unique show created for the festival, bringing members of the Clancy family together to celebrate the lives and music of the Clancy brothers and especially Liam, who passed away in December last. Michael Coady and Marietta O’Keeffe combine to perform an enjoyable blend of story and song. The Fayerweather Band with guests including Mala Raggett will play in the unique setting of the back room of the Brewery lane theatre, where an audience is encouraged to bring along there own tipple and enjoy the night’s entertainment, while celebrated Irish singer songwriter Mick Hanly will perform in the intimate setting of the Nano Nagle Hall.
The organising committee has highlighted the importance that fringe events play throughout the festival weekend. With this in mind the Brewery Lane Theatre group hot off the success of their sell-out show in recent weeks now stage lunch time theatre where the audience is treated to light lunch after an enjoyable performance.
The show is directed by the vastly experienced and talented Peg Power, sister of Liam Clancy who along with Liam Hogan directed and stared in the group’s first production 55 years ago.
For anyone feeling any way energetic, there is no better way to uncover Carrick-on-Suir’s sights and history than on foot. With this in mind there are two organised walks in the festival programme. The first is with Tom Walsh, who will share his unrivalled knowledge of the town as participants visit many of the town historic sights. The second is a walk along the picturesque banks of the river suir to Dove Hill.
The town’s relationship with the river is also celebrated on Saturday with an afternoon of family fun on the quayside, with street performers and musicians entertaining the masses. An afternoon of family fun will also take place on the Fair Green on Sunday in addition to musicians, street performers, circus workshops many of the town clubs and societies showcase their talents.
The Arts Trail is one section of the festival which continues to grow year on year and this is due to the support of the public and commitment and inspiration of local artists.
Live pub entertainment takes place throughout the weekend in the affiliated bars. Figgerty’s, Wall’s, O’Ceallachains and The Carraig Hotel. So whether you want to play the Wild Rover or simply have a sip from The Parting Glass, call into any of these public houses and you are sure to be greeted with a smile.
