Two Kilkenny artists make their mark on Galway festival

TWO Kilkenny artists are responsible for one of Galway Arts Festival's visual art highlights this summer.

Local artist Ann Mulrooney and Callan-born Breda Lynch have curated the exhibition ‘Darkness Visible’ which opened last week at Galway Arts Centre.

‘Darkness Visible’ brings together a group of artists from Ireland and the UK, whose work explores the nuances of the ornamental line through a variety of media, including video, sculpture, photography and drawing.

Clara-born Mulrooney graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2003, and works as an artist and curator in the UK and Ireland. Lynch is Head of Print at Limerick School of Art and Design, and a member of the EV+A exhibition committee in Limerick.

The two met during their BA in the Crawford College of Art in Cork, and the exhibition came about when the two renewed contact in 2006, on Mulrooney’s return to live in Co Kilkenny.

Centring on ornament, beauty and the Gothic, the exhibition promises to be a visual feast. It features work by Ailbhe Ni Bhriain, George Bolster, Andy Harper, Angela Huntbach, Breda Lynch, Eoin McHugh, Alice Maher, Ann Mulrooney and Kate Street.

The exhibition runs at the Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominic Street, Galway until August 23.
