FOR over 20 years a Ballyragget man has been mesmerising young and old with his magical prowess. Paul Phelan has had a life-long fascination with all things to do with the art of illusion, conjury, slight of hand and coin tricks.

He is in strong demand and has a legion of followers all over the country. His mind reading ability is legendary – even the most cunning of audience guests get caught out by him, adding to his reputation.

Recently he had the opportunity to share a stage with one of the legends of the art, Paul Daniels, who was in the news last week after he almost cut off his hand while making a wooden box for a trick to be part of his upcoming tour.

The TV magician was in Ireland at the invitation of the Munster Society of Magicians, of which Paul is a member.

“He was great fun and I was one of the magicians called up on stage to do some tricks with him,” Paul said.

The North Kilkenny wizard did a number of Max Malini tricks named after the Polish magician who first performed them.

Malini loved to do coin and card tricks and he has been an inspiration to Paul Phelan, who performed the “Wait For The Moment” coin trick which received great praise from Paul Daniels.

Like most magicians, Paul Phelan is self-taught and bought his first magic book in a prop shop in London and he hasn’t looked back since.

He also has excellent circus skills like juggling and is an ideal entertainer for any kind of birthday party or corporate event. He recently did a show for the Bubble Gum Club in Castle Durrow and has a close association with that children’s charity.

Paul also restores old furniture but prefers the stage, making the impossible plausible.

He can be contacted at pkentertainment@eircom.net or on 087 2676103.
