KILKENNY's citizens of the future are all set to take a very active part in ensuring that their home place is a city to be proud of with the launch of a new initiative from Keep Kilkenny Beautiful.
On Monday last, the Bainisteoir Bruscair scheme was launched at De la Salle primary school and it will involve boys and girls in Kilkenny from first and second class taking a leading role in keeping their city clean and tidy.
Basically, all the highly motivated young kids from Kilkenny will lead a team of over-12s, young adults and older, in ensuring that rubbish is cleared up and we all become more aware of keeping our streets, estates, workplaces and schools tidy.
The new scheme is being endorsed by Kilkenny senior hurling manager, Brian Cody, so De la Salle school, where Brian is the principal, was certainly a fitting place for the first teams to be signed up.
Spearheaded by Nora Darcy of the KKB, she explained to first class boys in the school that Kilkenny city was gearing up for an All-Ireland with a difference – the tidy towns title. Playing on the rivalry with Tipperary (a Tipp town won it last year), the young boys were certainly highly motivated to sign up for the new scheme.
One of the first signatories was Mayor Malcolm Noonan, a former student at De la Salle school.
The scheme, which is supported by the Kilkenny People and McDonald's Kilkenny, will run throughout the coming months as each member of the team promises not to rubbish Kilkenny.
A slogan competition will be run in the Kilkenny People over the coming weeks and there are plenty of prizes, courtesy of McDonald's up for grabs.
And while Kilkenny narrowly missed out last year on overall honours, the city can take inspiration from the words of Joseph Brennan, a first class student at De la Salle, who said you "Don't give up" in the hopes of bringing another All-Ireland title to Kilkenny - that of the Tidy Towns award.
KKB will also introduce stickers for businesses and cars to help promote the scheme even further.
