Local film needs your first preference

POLITICIANS are not the only people asking for your vote in the next few weeks – a local film company is too.

ThanklessFilms is asking Kilkenny to get behind their new show Rent a Friend involved this year’s RTÉ Storyland competition.

Storyland, now in its third year, gives up-coming filmmakers the opportunity to compete with each for the public vote via the RTÉ website. The competition is renowned for producing the highly successful Hardy Bucks, which has just finished its first season on RTÉ 2, and last year’s Zombie Bashers.

Starring Dermot Tobin and David Thompson, Rent a Friend follows the lives of two young men who decide that setting up a friend-renting agency is the only way to get off the dole queue. Before long, the characters (who are based on the writers) find that running a ‘friend pimping agency’ isn’t as easy as it seems on paper.

ThanklessFilms, also run by Dave and Dermot, has earned a large internet fan base (over 70,000 hits on YouTube) since the release of its first short ‘Collusion’ in late 2009. In the meantime, they have produced a host of successful videos and established The Red Door Film Festival alongside The Bridgebrook Arms in Thomastown.

Rent a Friend needs your vote if they are to succeed into making it into round two... They are not promising more jobs, better health services or political reform. Instead, they promise a heartfelt (ish) story through the highs and lows of running a business into the ground. Voting for ‘Rent a Friend’ will open on the Storyland website (www.rte.ie/storyland) on March 2. In the meantime, fans can show their support by visiting the ‘Rent A Friend’ website (www.rentafriend.ie) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/RentaFriend.RTEStoryland).
