A drawing ‘hedge school’ for over-50s

As part of Kilkenny’s Age-Friendly County programme, the Butler Gallery and Kilkenny County Council are hosting mornings of drawing from July 19-21 at Kilkenny Castle Park.

An art and oral history project, ‘Hedge School’ invites people over the age of 50 to a morning of conversation and drawing with artist Gypsy Ray, exploring heritage, nature and personal stories in the Castle Park.

The 18th and 19th-century rural term ‘hedge school’ refers to the impromptu, outdoor and conversational aspect of the workshops, which will explore the history and heritage of the area through people’s personal stories and memories.

Participants will be given a sketchbook and pencils to capture the natural and structural history of the Castle Park through drawing. Encouraged to pursue a follow-on habit of drawing outdoors, Hedge School attendees will learn about the different materials and techniques of drawing in a session of half-hour blocks.

The series will be followed by a social event on September 13 where participants will share, discuss and exhibit the drawings created during the workshops.
