In celebration of All Ireland Poetry Day tomorrow (Thursday), the Waterford Healing Arts Trust in partnership with Poetry Ireland and nine other hospitals and arts and health programmes around the country commissioned local poet Mark Roper to compile a short ‘Menu of Poems’ of contemporary poetry for distribution to service users in hospitals and day centres.

Mark invited eight poets – Pat Boran, Michael Coady, Martina Evans, Kerry Hardie, James Harpur, Mary O’Donnell, Myra Schneider and Grace Wells – to submit poems on the theme of ‘A Moment in Time’. Their poems approach this topic in various ways: some focus on the awareness of a single moment, others on a moment of realisation or choice. In the words of Mark Roper; “We hope that patients will enjoy reading and thinking about the imagery and music of these poems, and that the worlds they create will give them their own moments out of time.”

In Waterford Regional Hospital, the Menu of Poems will be distributed via the catering department with the menu cards. The St Luke’s Hospital Arts committee is also involved in the initiative.
