Kilkenny Arts Festival: Hit the streets

Many will recall the beautiful street decoration project which adorned St. Kieran’s Street last year and the festival has again worked with Éigse in Carlow and Spraoi in Waterford to present the Three Sisters Project. A series of workshops have been held in all three locations to produce several hundred ‘fish’ which will be hung on Kieran’s Street again this year.

The FESTIVAL TRAIL proved hugely popular with locals and visitors alike with young intrepid explorers completing the trail and questionnaire to be entered into a draw for prizes. The 2012 Festival Trail is kindly sponsored by Waterford Airport with really excellent prizes including flights for those who complete the trail and questionnaire correctly.

On the first weekend of the festival aerial dance theatre company Fidget Feet bring their breathtaking aerial trapeze show Hang On to Canal Walk on Sat Aug 11. The show mixes aerial dance with live music performance in a thrilling struggle between the sexes. During the week, the musicians from Cork Opera House’s production of Dido and Aeneas take to the streets to perform music from the ‘steampunk’ production of Purcell’s masterpiece which is being staged at the Watergate. See them at various locations from 1pm on Thurs Aug 16.

The Fanzini Brothers were a huge hit with festival audiences last year and they return with two new shows to the streets of Kilkenny on the second weekend of the festival. Professor Plunger the world-famous inventor will perform on the Parade and in the Castle Park on Saturday 18 August while Death Wish – an uproarious death-defying circus show – will appear in the same locations on Sun Aug 19th.

Finally, all the way from Florence, Italy comes the Badaminbumband to bring sunshine music and just a little bit of partying to the streets of Kilkenny. These devilishly handsome Italians will appear in various locations throughout Sat 18 and Sun 19th with a very special night time appearance on The Parade at 10.30pm on the Sat night.

All of these street activities and events are free and suitable for all the family.
