THE Music in Kilkenny concert series will present two performances this weekend.
On Saturday at 4pm in St John’s Church, John’s Street, Kilkenny, the Irish Baroque Orchestra Chamber Soloists led by Monica Huggett will play Schubert’s String Quartet in C. The quintet is regarded as “one of the most ideal expressions of mankind’s rich and varied emotional world”. Schubert’s C major string quintet transports the listener to Romantic Vienna, offering a chance to hear romantic music performed on period instruments as audiences in the 1830s would have heard it. Composed just months before his death, it is one of Schubert’s finest instrumental works, its rich evocative tones a result of the rather unusual combination of two cellos, two violins and viola.
On Sunday at 4pm, Hugh Tinney will play his final recital in the series of three performed in Castalia Hall, Ballytobin, Callan. This recital focuses on the music of France and includes pieces by Debussy, Fauré and Ravel. The programme also includes a piece from “Noctuary”, a recently commissioned work by Hugh Tinnery from Irish composer Raymond Deane.
Tickets for both concerts are e15 (e10 concession) at the door. For further information, call 056 61497.
