Kats theatre group is hosting a workshop by award-winning director and actor Paul Walsh on November 20 and 21.
The course is the first in a year of events planned by Kilkenny City’s oldest-running drama group.
The course, called “Modern Irish Drama – An Old Problem” will focus on actors, directors and writers and how to bring new techniques to producing drama without losing what makes the Irish style of theatre so special. He will use the works of Conor McPherson, Marina Carr and Martin McDonagh to highlight his points. The workshop is suitable for adults with all levels of experience, although participants must be 18 or over.
A native of Wexford, Paul Walsh has been an integral part of the dramatic scene there. He holds a degree in drama studies and is qualified in stage combat. He has directed over 50 productions and has won over a dozen directing awards, most notably being the youngest ever recipient for the All-Ireland drama finals best director for his production of By the Bog of Cats. He performed in the All-Ireland finals last year as Fr Flynn in Doubt with Wexford Drama Group.
The workshop will run from 10 am to 5pm on November 20 at the Ormond Hotel, including a break for lunch, and then from 7.30-10pm on November 21 in the Watergate Theatre. The cost of entry is €20, which includes KATS membership for the year. Places can be booked by calling Declan on 087 8340959.
