Melanjo went off a 20/1 starting price, and certainly wasn’t spoken off in terms of a possible each-way place, let alone the likely winner.

However, turning into the home straight, a shock result was certainly a most likely outcome as Melanjo surprisingly took up the running.

One of two mares in the race, Melanjo had gone clear but was soon challenged by Lord Sam.

The two fought it out to battle inside the final furlong, and Lord Sam loomed up alongside the eventual winner to challenge, but Melanjo dug deep to pull out all the stops and record a half length success.

James Morrissey’s wife was the winning owner, and the 6-year-old mare was bred by Maureen Mullins wife of the late legendary trainer Paddy Mullins.

Elsewhere, the feature event, the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes was won by the David Wachman trained Tannery who made virtually all under veteran rider Niall McCullough, while Wachman later completed a double when Oh Happy Days swooped late under Billy Lee to land the Follow Gowran Park on Facebook Handicap in a cracking finish.

Next meeting in Gowran Park is an all flat meeting tomorrow week Thursday May 17th.
