KILKENNY’S Brazilian percussion and music group JACARÉ is offering adults an opportunity to play the rhythms and instruments this spring.

A four-week series of workshops entitled ‘Samba Tasters’ will be held at the band’s new home at ‘The Dragon’s Lair’ in the Hebron Industrial Estate starting on May 4. No experience is needed and the emphasis will be on fun and learning. Enrolment is e30, and the group will provide all the equipment needed.

Last year proved to be a huge stepping stone for JACARÉ with invitations to Berlin’s Festival of Cultures and an invitation to perform onstage at the international meeting of Maracatu (an Afro-Brazilian music form) groups. They also played at The Festival of World Cultures, Belfast Carnival, The Drogheda Samba Festival and Dublin’s ‘Big Bang Festival’ and hosted a national symposium of percussionists in the presence of no less than three Brazilian drumming masters.

This year also sees the consolidation of JACARÉ with its sister group in Wexford with a combined group providing the musical backdrop for the National Lottery ‘Skyfest’ in Wexford last month. This is just one of many projects sparked off by the band, including the ‘Maracatu Ilha Brilho’ project that gathered players from samba in Kilkenny, Sligo, Belfast and Wexford to perform at major national events.
