This month the Kilkenny-based Young Irish Film Makers are beginning their 21st year of working with young people to deliver film-making programmes.

A number of new workshops are being introduced, along with two short films, Run and Dead Boy, that will be shot in the term up to Christmas.

Also, the National Youth Film School will be running again next summer and the young film makers will be shooting a feature film over four weeks.

YIFM’s junior drama programme is for ages 9 to 12 and runs on Mondays or Tuesdays from 4-6pm. This includes games, improvisation, story development and performance. The programme will include some basic introduction to film, theatre performance and production.

Senior programmes (ages 13 to 18) will include a specialist Acting Workshop (Thursdays from 4.30-6.30pm) in screen and stage acting, improvisation, script work and performance. All actors for YIFM productions will be chosen from this workshop.

Senior members interested in film making (Thursdays from 4.30-6.30pm) will be working in YIFM’s new TV Studio as well as being involved in film production, technical film production, editing, documentary and sound design. There will be a special portfolio preparation programme for senior students interested in applying for third-level courses in film, media or digital technology.

A new senior workshop this year is a digital Media Lab (Fridays from 4.30-6.30pm), which includes Special FX, graphic design, web design and development, social media, music production and app development. There will also be a Media Lab Club where members can work together on digital media projects and productions. These workshops will be run by new specialist staff member Thomas Horvath.

Registration for all courses is open until September 17 at 7pm. The number of spaces available is very limited. To secure a place, all fees must be paid on registration. A waiting list will be put in place for any unsuccessful applicants due to fully subscribed classes.

Juniors and seniors workshops are €80 per term (three terms of 10 weeks, with fees payable in advance). For more information or to register, contact Young Irish Film Makers, St Joseph’s Studios, Waterford Road, Kilkenny; call 056 7764677, email Angela at ang@yifm.com or see www.yifm.com.
