The ever popular carol service at St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, will take place on December 23 at 7.30pm.

This year, as is usual, the combined choirs of St Mary’s Cathedral and The Unity Singers will lead the congregation in a programme of favourite traditional carols interspersed with some more modern ones.

They will be joined by locally born mezzo soprano Tanya Sewell and male voice choir Sospiro, who will introduce proceedings with a rendition of The Wexford Carol.

The carols service has attracted large crowds since its inception a number of years ago as it is generally felt by the audience that the service helps to set the scene for the Christmas festivities. The congregation will be encouraged to participate in singing some of the better-known carols with the choirs.

A collection will be made during the ceremony for the restoration fund of St Mary’s Cathedral. The work on the Chapter House of the cathedral is almost complete with the conversion of the old meeting house into a centre for parish activities. A coffee shop and bookshop have now opened in the Chapter House.
