Both the benefits and security issues relating to the use of personal IT devices for company business were the focus of a Gavin Dixon of Business IT Solutions at a recent presentation to South East members of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the MBA Association.

“There is a cost saving and a benefit through increased productivity for companies who allow employees to use their personal devices. However, from a security viewpoint there needs to be an increased awareness of how to control ‘smart devices’ that can access business systems and information,’’ Mr Dixon advised.

He highlighted the need for businesses to implement encryption and “remote wipe” capabilities as minimum security measures.

In outlining the benefits that could be achieved through the use of cloud computing, he pointed to security and data compliance issues. “You need to know the location of the facility that is storing your (potentially sensitive) data and to have no doubts about the security and data compliance aspects of its storage,” he said.

Mr Dixon also focused on areas for business cost savings in IT, search engine optimisation and the relevance of social media to business and what he considered to be some of the top apps available for businesses.
