ALDI, the German supermarket discount chain are about to lodge a new planning application for a store in Callan. Cllr Matt Doran has confirmed that the company
are focussing on a site that was initially preferred by Kilkenny County Council. “It looks pretty promising and a number of pre-planning meetings have taken place. They are very keen to open here and we are delighted they are coming,” Cllr Doran said.
“It will be a major boost for the town and will bring people in from the hinterland and from places like Kilmoganny, Windgap and Dunamaggin and drawing people from Grangemockler and Kilmanagh,” Cllr Doran added.
He said it would help to stop the flow of shoppers from the Callan area to Kilkenny city and in particular to Clonmel and Tescos.
The construction will provide a major jobs boost and when completed there will be a number of positions to be filled within the store,” Cllr Doran pointed out. “This is hugely encouraging and I’m confident that it will go ahead,” he said.
An earlier planning application on a different site in Callan by Aldi was turned down by an An Bord Pleanala because it breached planning guidelines. This will not be an issue this time around because the site meets all the planning guidelines.
