A local Kilkenny shop, the Butterslip, has been announced as one of the Best Shops in Ireland.
In a survey conducted by The Irish Times and by Irish Times readers, hundreds of Ireland’s best loved and favourite local shops were nominated s and The Butterslip, Rose Inn Street, Kilkenny, beat off stiff competition to earn the title of “Best Gift Shop in Ireland.”
Anne Barber, proprietor, The Butterslip said, “Customers love to come in and potter around the shop, looking for a unique and charming gift. I have tried to reflect their needs in the way I have designed the shop. It’s quirky, colourful and full of unique gifts and I love the fact that it is seen as part of the local community and part of the local business fabric. I’m thrilled with this award!”
The campaign to identify The Best Shops in Ireland got under way during the summer months, with a team of secret shoppers visiting each of the 50 long list reader nominated shops around Ireland, taking into account a number of factors such as its place in the community, creative window displays, staff friendliness, excellence in customer service and interesting and unusual stock. The initial long list of over 50 shops was narrowed down to the 12 shops that excelled across a dozen categories. Each of the 50 shops has been profiled in a recent series in The Irish Times’ Saturday Magazine.
Orna Mulcahy, Managing Editor, The Irish Times and editor of the weekend’s Magazine commented, “We were absolutely bowled over by the response and by how keen people were to let us know about the shops they love. It became clear from our readers’ nominations that one of the main roles these local shops play is in bringing a sense of community to the local area. We would like to congratulate all the winners on the hard work and dedication they have shown in making their shops the best in Ireland.”
