Deputy Phelan says caviar comments were misinterpreted

Local Labour Party TD Ann Phelan has rejected claims that she called for caivar to be put on the Dail menu.

Local Labour Party TD Ann Phelan has rejected claims that she called for caivar to be put on the Dail menu.

Deputy Phelan had been discussing the highly-regarded trout caviar made by local couple Ger and Mags Kirwan in Goatsbridge trout farm in Thomastown. A story in today’s Irish Independent reported that the Labour TD was calling for the caviar to be on the Dail House menu.

The story provoked a very negative response from online commenters, with readers accusing Deputy Phelan of being detached from ordinary people and ‘living in cloud cuckoo land’. The story was also shared hundreds of times on Facebook and Twitter.

However, Deputy Phelan has now posted on her own Facebook page that she did not call for caviar to be put on the Dail menu.

“This was misinterpreted by the Irish Independent reporter, and was published in the paper,” she wrote.

“The opposite was the case. I stated that I could/would never call for caviar to be placed on the menu.”
