Mayor’s brewery visit request denied

KILKENNY Borough Council has been denied access to the St Francis Abbey Brewery to discuss the site’s long-term future with Diageo.

KILKENNY Borough Council has been denied access to the St Francis Abbey Brewery to discuss the site’s long-term future with Diageo.

With the brewery set to close in 2013, Mayor Fitzgerald sought a visit to inspect the site, and to discuss with Diageo issues such as the future of the micro-brewery and visitor centre. Four weeks ago, he wrote to operations manager Ian Hamilton requesting the visit.

At Monday’s meeting of the borough council, the mayor said that his request was not granted.

“They have not agreed to meet with us, and they have not agreed to cooperate,” he said.

“I want to personally say I am disappointed with how Diageo have responded to the request, but the matter is not finished.”
