‘Carbon award for Glanbia’s Virginia plant
Glanbia Dairy Ingredients, Virginia, County Cavan, has become the first Irish dairy company to receive the prestigious ‘Carbon Trust Standard’ award, a globally recognised certification for organisations that have measured, managed and reduced their carbon footprint and committed to making further reductions year on year.
It follows a concerted effort by management and staff in Glanbia’s Virginia facility that has resulted in an 8.5% reduction in carbon emissions relative to plant output over the past three years. The Virginia facility manufactures a range of ‘Enriched Milk Powders’ for export and fresh cream for the global drinks brand Baileys.
Speaking after the announcement of the award, Kilkenny man Martin Tynan, general manager of Glanbia Dairy Ingredients, Virginia said the company was hugely committed to sustainable production.
“We believe that carbon reduction makes economic and environmental sense, but it also sends a really clear signal to our stakeholders that we are committed to sustainable indigenous food production. For our key customer, Diageo/ Baileys, this is a very important differentiator,” Mr Tynan said.
