From Kilkenny to the Middle East

Gaeltec Utilities Ltd, a Kilkenny-based company that specialises in design, installation and commissioning in the energy, renewable and telecommunications sectors, has announced that it is expanding into Qatar, following the opening of an operating base in Qatar last year.
Gaeltec Qatar has been established as a company and is pursuing contract opportunities with the aim of starting operations in early this year. Gaeltec Qatar will offer services in overhead and underground cabling along with associated electrical utilities.
The new company was established after Gaeltec Utilities participated in a trade mission to the Middle East led by the former Minister for Trade and Development, Jan O’Sullivan, and hosted by Enterprise Ireland. Operations in the Gulf state will be managed from the Irish headquarters.
Gaeltec Utilities director Sean Hannick said he was delighted that the company was in a position to look at expansion abroad. “The establishment of this new company in Qatar is another milestone for Gaeltec Utilities. Through the consistent hard work and ingenuity of our employees, we have earned a reputation in Ireland and abroad as the industry leader in our field. Qatar is the fastest growing economy in the Gulf region and is at an earlier stage of infrastructural development, so Gaeltec Utilities Ltd is planning to export its expertise in the energy utility market to grow the business,” he said.
“This is our second recent expansion after the company set up an operating base in Africa in 2011, and it will come as a boost to our Irish operations since the new venture will be managed from Ireland,” he said. “Through continued assistance from Government and state agencies such as Enterprise Ireland we can ensure that we continue to have the opportunity to strengthen the business by exploring new markets and accelerating our export growth.”
Founded in 2003, Gaeltec Utilities is a subsidiary of TEGAEL (Telecomunicações Gás e Electricidade S.A.) from Portugal, according to the company website.
