Have a seat……. interview tips

So you've been ringing up "The Chosen Few" from your pick of the CVs and are getting ready to do the grilling.

However, remember the more comfortable the victim is, I mean interviewee, the better chance you have of getting more information out of them. So while the interviewee is practising their stock "Where do I see myself in five years" answer, you need to prepare yourself or perhaps your team on how to conduct the interview. Clipboards at the ready!

1. Where are you holding the interview? Have a room or venue where you can be assured of no interruptions. Just as you would expect the person you are interviewing to turn off their phone heading into the interview, you should also have the same respect and manners towards them.

2. Have you a key set of questions? Having a compulsory set of questions gives all applicants the same chance as well as giving some order to the process. If you have several people in on the interview, have a meeting to discuss what questions should be asked and then assign questions to each person to save confusion. It will be inevitable that other questions will come up throughout the interview as you will be responding to answers thrown back at you and face it, everyone is different and curiosity always sneaks in.

3. Look smart. No matter what you are interviewing for, it is important to look your best. If your dress code is jeans and a t-shirt, stick to it but just make sure they are clean and unwrinkled. First impressions last and it does work both ways. You don't want a potential employee turning you down because you look sloppy.

4. During the interview be prepared and have a copy of the person's CV you are interviewing. I like to staple a sheet to the front in order to take notes on details that may help you to make your decision. Don't try and fool yourself into thinking that you will remember everything about everyone.

5. Arrange a meeting after all the interviews to decide amongst yourself or your team on your decision. You all should have notes taken so it shouldn't take long unless you need to tear Michael off Tom over hiring Contestant Number 1or 2.

To be honest, just having stuff prepared is the biggest step to getting through the process and if you are nervous, because I know what it is like, take a few deep breaths and remember that they are more nervous than you are! I know my mother used to say that to me about spiders but I still have my doubts.

Anyhow, till next week, which will be the last part on the topic of recruitment and I'll be finishing by looking at how to choose your recruit after the interviewing process is over.
