Teach your brightest to be the best
"Any company that is professional in its approach to learning and development should have executive coaching as a key element," says Stephen Doran, managing director of Empower Training.
"The effectiveness of this type of training has been proven, and a report which was compiled by the Manchester Consulting Group has shown that companies can see an almost 600% return on investment from executive coaching, which is a higher return than other forms of training."
Of course, coaching tools can be used by any manager looking to develop their staff, and coaching is widely recognised as a powerful tool for creating a positive, people-oriented culture within organisations of any size. When it comes to creating a future executive there is the option of hiring in external, expert coaches or of upskilling members of the senior management team with strategic coaching skills. And when the process involves moulding the most senior people in business, better results are not simply to be welcomed - they are a requirement.
"There is great benefit in offering executive coaching to high-potential employees," says Mr Doran. "It is common practice, especially among blue chip organisations, to hot-house the best people, and these organisations tend to be good at picking up on the high performers. There is a realisation that they can bring these people through more quickly with good coaching - it will give them greater confidence, the ability to delegate, and it will generally improve their performance."
This is especially true in the case of somebody who is already performing to a high level in a technical capacity - but whose promotion may have coincided with a realisation that some of their people skills might be somewhat deficient.
"Some technically competent people may struggle with the range of skills needed to operate at the higher levels of management," explained Doran. "But when it comes to emotional intelligence, it is a feature of senior management that people with good interpersonal skills rise through the ranks more quickly than a person who lacks this sort of interpersonal dexterity.
And the further up an organisation you go, the more important these skills become."
The diploma in Executive & Management Coaching begins in Kilkenny on April 16 and continues for a further ten Wednesdays after that.
