forward stores and beef cattle selling well

The Indian summer we have experienced over the past two weeks has come just in time for most Irish farmers. It is amazing how much work has been done in a very small window of time. In reality the work that is normally carried on in the four to five months of spring / summer has been condensed into these past few weeks. Some farmers in very wet areas have still problems with many fields still not dry enough to carry heavy machinery which also means that a lot of fodder which has not been saved may well remain where it is. The summer of 2012 will go down as one of the most difficult for all involved in agriculture.

The dangers that presents itself on farms was brought home by the tragedy that occurred on the Spence family in Co Down. The loss of a father and two sons in such awful circumstances will never be forgotten by their family and with a fourth member of the same family in hospital and lucky to survive shows how dangerous slurry tanks and lagoons can be and must be treated with respect. The loss of life and limb with uncovered PTOs is another danger we should look at on all farms.Everyone involved in agriculture should take note of all the dangers involved with this enterprise and make sure that they are prevented before they occur. Even that quite bull you have had for years could become a killer.

The cattle sale of last Thursday was a bigger affair with forward stores and beef selling well. Plain cattle are still difficult to sell and all Friesian animals have slipped in price by as much as €150 per head compared to the heady days of last April, May and June. Factory quotes are still disappointing but at least around the sales ring there seems to be more of a want for these type animals. The sheep trade of last Monday was solid with the lighter lambs more difficult to sell.If numbers start to increase factories will reduce quotes which will not be welcome by the mid season lamb producer.Lets hope the reduction is not very big as feeding lambs at the present price of meal is a expensive occupation. Until next week please be careful out there and good buying, good selling and good luck.
