On Thursday, Cillín Farm Advisory Group will hold a Farm Walk on the farm of Jim Hughes, Wallslough, Kilkenny. The walk is a BTAP approved event, meaning any BTAP member who attends the event will receive credit for attendance.

The topics on the evening include fodder budgeting / assessing silage supplies, growing a good second cut (slurry / fertiliser application), alternative forage crops at this stage of the year and forage quality and feeding considerations. The event will be signposted from the Kilkenny – Bennettsbridge road. All are welcome to attend. For further information please contact Cillín Farm Advisory Group on 056 7756484.

It is predicted that there will be a fodder deficit on the majority of farms this winter. Predicting a deficit in advance is crucial in order to accurately plan how to bridge the fodder gap. It is advisable that all farmers complete a fodder budget in order to assess their own situation. This budget is based on stock numbers, winter length and silage availability on the farm.

If a deficit is identified a plan needs to be implemented to overcome the deficit. Each farm will differ but one realistic option is to feed meal to stretch out silage supplies, while alternative forage crops such as kale and fodder beet may be a realistic option on other farms. These topics and more will be discussed in detail at the farm walk.
