Beef and forward store bullocks and heifers are still selling well

Its Monday morning just before our sheep sale its also the day after The Cats and The Tribesmen pulled off the first draw since 1959 in an All Ireland hurling final. There will be much debate around the ring today about this hard fought game which ended up with Galway winning the first half and Kilkenny coming back in the second half and Galway having to snatch a draw. The replay on the last Sunday in September will be very interesting but if all the Kilkenny team can match King Henry’s enthusiasm and hunger of yesterday’s encounter the cats could well get the cream.

The cattle sale on Thursday was a small affair due to the good spell of weather. Most farmers had corn to cut with hay and silage making also on the agenda. It is very late in the year for many of these crops and it is possible that the feed value will not be as good as other years but at least it will provide bulk.

Beef and forward store bullocks and heifers are still selling well with the smaller supply meaning that factories have to increase quotes to attract numbers. The lighter and plain store bullocks and heifers are the most difficult to sell with most farmers looking for animals with a shorter keep. The reason for this is that feed is scarce and meal expensive so the quicker you can turn an animal the better. It could be a difficult year for the producer of Friesians and light stores but I expect quality lots to still remain a steady trade. On Thursday for first time in many years we had an English customer operating .With sterling much stronger and prices in mainland UK ahead of here it is possible that this trade may continue for a few weeks.

Monday’s sheep sale turned out better than expected with most lambs from 45 to 54 kg showing similar returns to last weeks even though factory quotes are reduced by 10 cent per kilo. Store buyers are not over plentiful due to lack of grass and expensive meal A special sale of Ped Charollais Rams saw a top price of €740 for the first prize winner.Breeding ewes saw hoggets peak at €184 per head. Until next week look after each other and good buying, good selling and good luck.
