A real looker that delights

Mercedes Benz CLS Shooting Brake

If you are a lucky one who can shell out a pile for a car to satisfy your visual pleasure but who can’t separate need from desire, then proceed with caution.

Mercedes Benz (MB) have a car to fill your heart’s desire, and lighten your pocket. Some have even suggested it is the sort of car that can make other Mercedes owners crave what you have.

The new CLS 250 CDi Shooting Brake is as shapely a pile of metal as I have ever seen on wheels. MB have added a tailgate to the handsome CLS to create this beauty. This 4-door coupe isn’t small (over 16 feet long) in any respect - visual impact, interior or boot space or indeed performance.

Gengle flowing lines

But with a price tag of over 73,000 euro it is up in the clouds as far as many are concerned, even if what you get for your money is very considerable. Still, we can all dream!

The CLS 250 style is all gentle flowing lines from the steeply raked windscreen through the roofline that eases down at the tail end. It is a low slung car and tall people might have to steep to get into it, but with lots of glass all round visibility is excellent. Frameless doors enhance the visuals, but because of the sharp flowing roofline you have to mind you don’t bump you head getting into the rear.

Still, this car is much more practical than any two door coupe. The interior is luxurious, all shining veneer, big and comfortable leather seats with rich looking stitch finish. Accommodating? Yes. Likewise the boot, which offers 590 litres of space (1,550 with seats down) and holds a full size spare under the floor.

Under the hood of the test car was a strong punching 204bhp turbo diesel engine. The torque surge takes matching in a car of its size.

Easy and smooth

The automatic gearbox is seldom stuck for a ratio. Changes are easy, fast and smooth. Shift paddles are discreetly placed behind the steering’ if that be the choice of drive. This is a car that ‘whooshes’ along stately, purposefully, powerfully with the occupants comfortable in an opulent cabin that locks the world outside.

Drive the CLS like and out and out racer, and it will give the odd grunt, in an almost mannerly fashion. Drive it for pleasure and you give licence to a performer whose elegance matches its fetching looks.
