Sending or reading mobile phone texts is the most common dangerously distracting activity for Irish drivers.

In a survey carried out by Continental Tyres, mobile phone texting was cited by just over 10% of drivers as the No. 1 activity that caused the most ‘near misses’ on roads.

Other distracting activities that almost caused an accident included changing/searching for music (8%) and taking or making a phone call (7%). As the smartphone becomes more and more popular, just over 5% of drivers highlighted checking email or the internet as a reason for taking their eyes off the road.
