PLAYING with the aid of the strong breeze and with the sun on their backs, Emeralds (Urlingford) dominated the first half of this intermediate hurling championship first round game played at well presented Johnstown on Saturday.

However, they failed to turn their superiority into scores and they paid a heavy penalty when St Lachtain’s (Freshford), by using the elements well in the second half, stormed back into the match and ultimately on to victory. The Urlingford side began the game in positive mood. They were on top for long periods of the opening half and with the help of a goal from inter-county star, Aidan Fogarty they had established a nine points lead approaching half-time.

Then Noel Hickey had a goal for the Freshford side which changed the complexion of the game. The Urlingford side were now just six points clear at the break despite their dominance in that opening period.

At that stage the scoreline read: Emeralds 1-9, St Lachtain’s 1-3.

Quick scores

With the aid of the stiff breeze the Freshford side went about getting back into the game early in the new half. They had three points in quick succession to reduce the deficit to three.

Then midway through the half disaster struck for the Urlingford side when they had a player sidelined for a straight red card offence. From there on it was all downhill for them.

Further goals followed for St Lachtain’s from Eoin Guinan, who fired home a 20 metre free, and his brother Paul, who hit the target from play as St Lachtain’s recorded a five point victory and ensured their place in the quarter-finals.
