Inter clubs drive on strongly into season

Kilkenny intermediate clubs will be split 50/50 in terms of the make-up of management teams when the new hurling league/championship season swings into action in April.

Half the clubs have retained the managers and most of the selection committees who served last year, but with the likes of Pat Hoban moving on from relegated senior side, Dunnamaggin, to take over the Kilkenny minor team, an equal number of outfits will have new people steering the ship.

D. Carey (Young Irelands), Maurice Aylward (St Patrick’s), Martin Gleeson (St Lachtain’s), Liam Sutton (Mooncoin) and Thomastown’s Paul Treacy will all drive on with their clubs.

The latter will lead Thomastown into the All-Ireland club junior hurling semi-final on Sunday, and they will be hoping to book a place in the final in Croke Park on Sunday, February 10.

Thurles pair with Emeralds

Thurles-based coaches Paddy Moore and Paddy McCormack have been signed by Emeralds (Urlingford) to boost their management team. Mr Moore worked with the club in 2009, when they enjoyed a great run before being beaten by Danesfort in the semi-final.

Emeralds will be hoped to regain some of the spark from that season, when a small thing could have pushed them on to promotion.

Brian Young (Conahy) and Good Counsel based teacher Declan Wall (Mulllinavat) are some of the other new faces on the block.

Following the departure of Young Irelands clubman, Pat O’Neill, the Rower-Inistioge appointed Ger Morrissey as trainer/manager. His selectors include former County Board secretary and vice-chairman, Pat Dunphy.

Most clubs have already resumed training, and with draws for the groups made, what is sure to be hectic action won’t be long in coming.

Group I, first round – Dunnamaggin v St Patrick’s; Conahy Shamrocks v Thomastown, Young Irelands v Mooncoin.

Group II – Tullogher-Rosbercon v Mullinavat; Rower-Inistioge v St Lachtain’s; Glenmore v Emeralds.
