THE bad weather was a real spoilsport during December and the early weeks of the New Year, but when it settled O’Loughlin-Gaels hit the glory trail quickly.
On the second last day of January the St John’s Park outfit powered their way to a gutsy win in the AIB Leinster club senior hurling championship final. They beat the highly fancied Oulart-the-Ballagh (Wexford) by 0-14 to 1-8 after being led most of the way.
On the way to their second win in the provincial club series, O’Loughlin’s gave their fans some anxious moments.
They were very sluggish during the opening half and trailed by 0-6 to 1-4 at the break after the opposition had missed a penalty.
Indeed, O’Loughlin’s were not an awful lot better during the third quarter.
Then they hit the power button, and a once testing deficit of four points was turned into a thrilling three point victory.
Team captain, Martin Comerford, played a key role, shooting a pair of uplifting points before Niall McEvoy shot the equaliser (1-7 to 0-10) with less than 10 minutes remaining.
O’Loughlin’s roared on to the finish. They won the Leinster championship previously in 2003/04.
To mark their success, the O’Loughlin’s club, through team captain Martin Comerford, were honoured as the Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People sports stars of the month for January 2011.
The next Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People annual banquet will be held in February of 2012, when all the winners will be invited to a celebration dinner at which the monthly awards will be presented to the various winners.
