Phelan is star in combined team win

John Lockes2-6

A GREAT second half performance by midfielder Frank Phelan, during which he scored seven points from play, inspired Galmoy/Windgap to a deserved win over John Lockes Callan in this rousing under-16 Roinn B hurling league tie at Windgap.

John Lockes had been right in the game up to half-time. Indeed, they led by 2-5 to 2-3 at the break but then they fell away.

The losers made a great start, scoring two early goals. The first came from full-forward Billy Bergin. This was quickly followed by a strike from Tony Power, who had a good game until he ran out of steam.

The goal scoring trend continued when Brendan Power struck one for Galmoy/ Windgap in the 10th minute. The exchanges during the remainder of the half were evenly contested with the Callan half forward line contributing a point each along with a pointed free each from Adam Phelan and James Power.

Galmoy/Windgap had two points from Padraig Walsh and Peter Hennessy before centre-forward Padraig Walsh hit the net in the 20th minute. His brother, Niall, pointed a free before the break to leave his side two adrift at the interval having played against the strong breeze.

Galmoy/Windgap lost Eoghan Vaughan with an ankle injury midway through the half. Peter Hennessy moved out to midfield.

The second half turned into the Frank Phelan show as the Galmoy/Windgap midfielder popped over points from all angles to drive his side on to victory. Centre-back Jason Stanley also dominated and struck three points from play, as well as one from a 65.

The final nail in the John Lockes coffin came when Peter Hennessy goaled in the dying moments. The Callan boys had only one score in that second period from a Josh Haines free.

In fairness it must be said that Haines played a great game as he ran at the home defence with menace on several occasions. Others who did well for ’Lockes included Adam Phelan, Tony Power and Billy Bergin.
