Strong Clare break Kilkenny hearts

Clare 2-17, Kilkenny 2-11

Clare 2-17, Kilkenny 2-11

KILKENNY’S quest to win a 12th under-21 All-Ireland title for the county ended in disappointment as a resurgent Clare roared to victory in Semple Stadium.

The Banner were full value for their win under the lights in Thurles on Saturday night, controlling the game in the second half to lift their second title at this grade in four years.

It looked like Kilkenny had turned the corner when late goals from John Power and Ger Aylward saw them overturn a six-point deficit to go in three points clear at half-time (2-7 to 1-7).

However, a powerful performance from their full-forward line of Cathal McInerney, Conor McGrath and Man of the Match Cathal O’Connell, allied to a strong display in defence, saw the Banner outscore their rivals by 1-10 to 0-4 after the break and stride to victory.

See this week’s Kilkenny People for full match report and reaction.
