Kilkenny CBS didn’t play to their full potential, but still they were too enough to beat Good Counsel (New Ross) by 1-16 to 0-13 in the Leinster colleges senior hurling championship semi-final in the Waterford IT grounds this afternoon.
Free taker Andrew Gaffney helped himself to 11 points when the defending champions won through for a final showdown with arch city rivals, St Kieran’s College. This will be a repeat of the League final which was won by Kieran’s.
The CBS out-classed the opposition by 0-8 to 0-1 during the closing 20 minutes or so. The losers had a man red carded in injury-time, but by that stage the game was decided. Gaffney shot five late scores and the strong finishing Niall Mullins (2) and Robbie Buckley grabbed the others.
The losers were backed by the strong wind during the first half. When they were held to level terms of 0-8 each at the break they looked in trouble. They looked in real troubled when Robbie Buckley lashed home a class goal in the 32nd minute to send the CBS spirits soaring.
Good Counsel reorganised, and when Cathal Bolger pointed in the 38th minute they actually led by 0-12 to 1-8. After Gaffney equalised, the defending champions raced away to victory, but their performance was less than convincing.
