With an incredible success rate spanning three decades and almost 17 years, Brian Cody’s record as Kilkenny senior hurling manager will never be equalled.

With ten All-Ireland titles won during that period, Kilkenny’s dominance on the inter county hurling scene has not just made them a national phenomenon, but an international one.

During Brian Cody’s term, Kilkenny have won an amazing 82% of their championship games.

Next Sunday though, Kilkenny face Galway - a county that has fared better than most against the Cats. Kilkenny have played Galway 14 times, and with 3 out of five wins on average, the familarity in the last five years has seen the sides produce some thrillers.

In 2012 the counties went through the full gambit of results - with Galway winning the Leinster final by 10 points, the sides drawing in the All-Ireland decider but Kilkenny came back to secure victory in the replayed final.

An indication of the rivalry since 2000 is that both counties thrive on the adage that goals win games and over the 14 matches during that spell, the sides have scored exactly 31 goals each.

Spectacular Results

Kilkenny have hit Galway for four goals in 2003 and 2004, but when Galway find their eye in front of goal they have produced spectacular results. In ’04, Kilkenny handed out a 19-point beating to Galway but 12 months later the Tribesmen scored five goals against a defiant Kilkenny - who hit back with four but they won out 5-18 to 4-18. Galway also hit Kilkenny for five goals in last year’s drawn Leinster Championship clash in Tullamore.

Overall, Kilkenny since 2000 have played Galway 14 times, won nine, drawn two and lost three in the championship. The biggest winning margin for the Cats was in ’04 with 19 points, 4-20 to 1-10 while Galway’s biggest victory was the 2012 Leinster Final - winning by 10 points 2-21 to 2-11.
