Graigue-Ballycallan prevailed over a depleted Galmoy selection in this Northern junior ‘B’ hurling league tie at Galmoy on Saturday.
The visitors had first use of the breeze. They wasted no time getting started with Ger Teehan and Tommy Manogue pointing, allied to two from placed balls by John Robinson. Donncha Gray won a Galmoy free which Tom Phelan (Bawn) pointed to open the Galmoy account.
Phelan repeated the act in the 18th minute when Gavin Doherty was fouled. The only goal of the game came in the 20th minute when John Robinson ran through the defence before setting up John Dunphy for glory. Good inter-play between Gavin Doherty and Tom Phelan resulted in a Pierce Harte response for the hosts.
A point each from Robinson and Dunphy gave Graigue a half time superiority of 1-7 to 0-5.
Galmoy began the new half brightly with Donncha Gray and Micheál Phelan raising white flags. The Graigue full-forward line amassed six points between them from play in this half with Tommy Manogue and Philip Heafey being particularly impressive as they pressed home their dominance in the final quarter.
Their best player, right half back Anthony Ryan, rounded off a good performance with a final minute point.
Galmoy battled gamely and were unlucky not to pick off a few more scores as they worked the ball up to their forward line regularly enough in the final half. Thomas Phelan(Castletown) and Phil Doyle defended well throughout.
