O’Loughlin’s simply had too much class

O’Loughlin Gaels1-20

OUR opening match of the season between O’Loughlin Gaels and Dunnamaggin in the All County Junior League proved somewhat disappointing, and fell a little flat. The city side proved far too good for opponents who were trying out a few things.

Playing with the strengthening breeze in the first half, O’Loughlin’s found it a difficult assignment to pierce the home defence in which Aidan Donovan, Richard O’Shea, Andrew Hickey and Andrew Fitzpatrick were doggedly determined to keep the differential down to a manageable proportion until they would be favoured by the elements. By the midway point in the half four points divided the sides.

Dunnamaggin would have taken that before game commencement. However, all of that was to change in the closing 12 minutes of the initial half, when the O’Loughlin’s tore holes through the heart of the defence, led by Davy Broderick.

The four-point differential blossomed into an 11-point problem by half time thanks in the main to the thunderous hurling of Brian Dowling, Eoin Grant, Pat and Andrew Cantwell, Billy and Rick Leydon, and the busy Jack Nolan.

Dunnamaggan tried to redress the situation afterwards, and in honesty they gave it a tidy rattle, but they found the likes of Sammy Johnston in goal, Michael Twomey, Mark Croghan and Richie Moylan more than uncooperative in dishing out presents.

Paddy Delaney, Kieran Bergin and Andrew O’Dwyer did their utmost, as did Sean Conery, Paul Kirwan and Donal O’Shea to stem the O’Loughlin onslaught, but their best was never going to suffice against a team that possessed a greater urgency, capability and hurling acumen.
