St Lachtain’s 1-17

St Lachtain’s 1-17

Clara 1-11

st LACHTAIN’S (Freshford) kept their under-16 hurling championship Roinn B campaign on track when they scored a good win over Clara in this entertaining second round game in Jenkinstown on Sunday.

While six points wazs the winning margin, it was only in the closing moments that Freshford secured victory. Lachtain’s created a number of early scoring chances, but it was Jason Byrne (C) who opened the scoring with a free.

Ben Lyng opened the winners account after that with a point, which was quickly followed by another from Ross Walsh after Daniel Rafter brought a great ball out of defence. Jason Byrne dropped in a free which the winners defence failed to deal with before Joe Connolly deflected the ball over the line and into the net to put Clara 1-1 to 0-2 ahead.

Connolly added a point by the 12th minute, but it was all square when Lachtain’s hit back for minors from John Quinn (2) and Darren Brennan (free). Aaron Casey and Byrne edged Clara ahead when they tipped over points.

John Quinn and Jason Byrne exchanged points before St Lachtain’s finished the stronger with minors by Ross Walsh, Darren Brennan and Liam Maher to lead by 0-9 to 1-5 at the rest.

After the change Jason Byrne converted an early free to level it for the third time. Quinn and Brennan then added points. In the 40th minute Clara had a change to go ahead when awarded a penalty, but Byrne’s well struck shot was saved by Paul White and the ball was cleared to safety.

A Ross Walsh point was followed by two from frees by Byrne to leave the minimum between the sides. Brennan hit back with two converted frees but Joe Connolly kept Clara in touch when he sent the white flying.

After that John Quinn worked his way through, and with little room to swing the hurley, he booted the sliotar to the Clara net to give his side a five point lead with 10 minutes remaining. Matt Kenny breathed some life into the losers cause when he landed a brace of points, but Lachtain’s were not done.

They Freshford outfit finished strongly, and points from Eamon Hennessy, John Quinn and Ross Walsh pushed them through for a semi-final meeting with Tullaroan.
