This was a fairly lively South junior hurling ‘B’ league/championship clash between two well-matched teams in Inistioge on Saturday, writes Barrie Henriques.

The decisive factor was the abilities of the Rower Inistioge forwards, Michael Doyle, Conor Lyng and Padraig Grace to carve out scoring opportunities for each other, and rattling over the scores themselves when the occasion presented.

The younger John Lockes were always snapping at the Rower heels, not allowing them too much free time, or space within which to work. Scores were on the scarce side early on; the home side relying for their opening two scores from James Leahy and Robert Grace.

The Rower-Inistioge gown by 1-15 to 3-8.

The ’Lockes bagged their opening score in the 11th minute when James Power slammed home a terrifically brave goal. A minute later Robbie Grace levelled matters with a point, and then Michael Doyle shot the only goal of the game for the home side in the 13th minute.

That goal was the end result of a well-struck free by the potential county councillor.

At half-time the Rower led by 1-7 to 1-4 - the end result being inconclusive at that stage.

The Rower increased their lead to seven points by the 40th minute thanks to points by Michael Doyle (2), Michael McDonald and Conor Lyng. By the end of the third quarter the lead had been extended still further to nine points, but the Callan lads were not rolling over.

A goal by Pat Power in the 52nd minute narrowed the gap to six points. A goal and a point from the capable James Power (goal from a penalty, the point a free) had the defecit back to a single point with four minutes remaining.

The losers were drawing off an energetic head of steam, but alas, they just could not get the leveller, which they certainly deserved.

Best for the Rower were Toby Kavanagh, Paul Flood, David Lyster, Padraig Grace, Michael Doyle and Conor Lyng. For John Lockes, Keith Doheny, Derek Halley, Robert Kerwick, Mark Nolan, Owen Fahy, Pat Power, James Power, and Niall Hennessy were best.
