The Kilkenny senior camogie team made a disastrous start to their National Camogie League campaign as they were blown away at a windy Killeagh on Sunday.
Featuring six senior inter-county debutantes, and missing several of last year’s panel, a team playing together for the very first time were on the receiving end of a 17-point trouncing from a rampant Cork.
The Cats, under new manager Brendan Williams, almost made a whirlwind start after just 15 seconds when Edel Maher raced through the Cork defence, but her shot was saved by Aoife Murray.
However, Cork completely dominated afterwards without having to move too far up the gears. A brace of goals from Jennifer O’Leary confirmed the Rebelettes superior dominance as they led 2-8 to 0-1 after 23 minutes.
The hard-trying Aoife Neary scored three consecutive frees to narrow the gap, but Cork still led handsomely (2-9 to 0-4) at the interval.
Kilkenny introduced Shelly Farrell and Katie Power early in the second-half fresh from playing in Waterford IT’s Ashbourne Cup success, but didn’t bring any improvement to their play despite Cork taking their foot off the pedal.
A third goal from substitute Finola Neville rounded off a miserable afternoon for Kilkenny as they were condemned to a heavy defeat.
Following an afternoon to forget, Kilkenny must win their next league encounter against Clare on Sunday, March 11 if they are to keep their league hopes alive.
