Carrigeen swept aside the challenge of Laois opposition as they stormed home by an impressive margin of 13 points to win the Bob O’Keeffe Cup.

Playing with the breeze in the first half Carrigeen went ahead at an early stage courtesy of points from Liam Roche and Frank and Kevin Law. The visitors had their first score after 10 minutes, and managed to get a foothold in the game.

As the first half wore on the Laois quickly pulled alongside Carrigeen. Driving on, they almost drew level.

Goalkeeper Jamie Carroll halted the Borris momentum with a free launched from deep inside his own half. The strike sailed over the Borris defence and dropped into the back of Adrian Moore’s net.

That score, quickly followed by points from Anthony O’Brien and Dean Gates, gave Carrigeen a led which they never relinquished. The first half closed with the Kilkenny side in command thanks to a 1 -8 to 0-4 scoreline.

Hurling against the breeze in the second half, Carrigeen struggled to regain their form. Borris posted three good scores, but a turning point came when Carrigeen keeper Jamie Carroll made an excellent save.

From that point on Carrigeen pulled further ahead with points from Niall Gallagher, Dean Gates, Kevin Law and Johnny Cooney.

As the second half wore on, Carrigeen extended their lead. Midfielder Dean Gates registered an impressive score, following a clever pass from Law once more.

Frank Law, who subsequently was awarded man of the match, had a huge impact on the game from the heart of the Carrigeen defence.

Half-backs Anthony O’Brien and Cathal O’Keeffe both covered ground and attacked well, while Dean Gates worked hard in midfield. The centrefield man both created scores and tacked on a few for himself.

Kevin Law and Niall Gallagher were Carrigeen’s best forwards on the night.
