THE Kilkenny under-12 girls’ team made the short trip to Carlow at the weekend to take part in their second Leinster blitz of the season.
Having claimed the Division Three title during their first outing in May Kilkenny found themselves moved up to Division Two for Saturday’s competition. There were four divisions in the competition, with teams from all 12 counties in the province, as well as some ‘B’ teams.
Kilkenny were joined in Division Two by Westmeath, Wicklow, Louth and Offaly. They were grouped with stronger opposition, but the Kittens matched their opponents throughout.
In the opening game Kilkenny lost narrowly to Wicklow 2-1 to 1-1 but by round two the girls were in top gear. A Ciara Delaney point, followed by a blistering goal from Gowran’s Kate Drennan, saw them beat Westmeath by 1-1 to 0-3.
In round three points from Ciara Delaney and Danielle Morrissey left Kilkenny neck and neck with as the game ticked into the final two minutes, but Kate Drennan hit the net again to give her side a well deserved 1-2 to 0-2 win.
The Kittens faced Offaly in the final game with the winners guaranteed a spot in the final. With a gale force wind playing havoc the Offaly girls took advantage of the elements, securing the all-important scores to win 2-1 to 0-0 and pip Kilkenny for a place in the final.
Despite being pitted against stronger opposition the young Kilkenny squad impressed all with their well-drilled routine.
