The Allianz Cumann-na-mBunscol hurling finals got off to a flying start in John’s Park on Saturday when Tullaroan and Galmoy met in the Educational Supplies Roinn D final.
Galmoy began brightly and had a point on the ’board within two minutes when Conor Drennan’s goal bound shot was deflected over the bar by the defence. Galmoy, playing with the strong breeze, had the better of things in the opening minutes but Tullaroan were soon on terms thanks to a free from Joey Walsh.
Tommy Walton edged Tullaroan in front with a point. Straight from the puck-out Conor Drennan landed a fine point for Galmoy from midfield to level. The losers went a point in front again thanks to Conor Drennan.
Tullaroan were gradually getting to grips with their opponents and in the 11th minute they scored their first goal. Bobby Cummins finished to the net after Galmoy ’keeper David Sherman had made a point blank save.
The winners were rampant. Within two minutes Bobby Cummins shot another goal. Adam Tallis added a point and when a 65 from Joey Walsh ended up in the net it looked ominous for Galmoy. Tommy Walton added a point to stretch Tullaroan’s lead, but Galmoy came storming back. Conor Drennan pointed a difficult free from close to the sideline to lift spirits.
Within a minute Conor Drennan soloed from midfield and buried the sliotar in the Tullaroan net. Conor
followed with a super point. Galmoy were back in the game. Tullaroan replied with a minor from a free from Bobby Cummins but Conor Drennan wasn’t finished. He point to leave Tullaroan leaders by 3-4 to 1-6 at the break.
The breeze strenghtened after the turn and Tullaroan went on the offensive. They were guilty of wayward
shooting and missed chances. Their superior stickwork and slick passing began to tell. Tommy Walton
pointed after a neat pass from a quickly taken free by Joey Walsh.
Bobby Cummins netted in the 38th minute. Galmoy defended with all their might. They stuck resoloutely to
their task and Conor Drennan pointed a free. Tullaroan were not going to be denied. Three points from
Bobby Cummins left them well in control. Victory was theirs.
Galmoy launched one final assault but goalie Simon Lanigan denied them. Galmoy can be proud. All their players tried their utmost. Conor Drennan and Billy Drennan were outstanding for Galmoy while Bobby Cummins, Tommy Walton and Joey Walsh were the pick of a fine Tullaroan squad.
